Emergency Plumbing Solutions

A Functioning plumbing system is one of the most important things in a household, but unfortunately not everybody realizes this until a problem has surfaced. Prevention is always better than finding a solution where there is already a problem in the system, so it’s best to put in measures that keep your system in good shape. By taking care of what happens in the sewer, regularly checking the plumbing equipment, and making sure that everything is in good working order, you can avoid unforeseen problems.

Common Plumbing Problems And Emergency Solutions

Leaking pipes, drain clogs or overflowing toilets are some common plumbing problems that most homeowners have to face. Improper management and repair of common problems can create a big plumbing problem for the entire household. The best method is to have plumbing emergency solutions to ensure that the situation can be put under control.

Drain clogs

Clogs are one of the most common plumbing problems experienced in the home. No matter the location; whether you are in the kitchen, bath, shower or laundry room, there may be residues such as hair, grease, or leftovers and all these can cause serious problems. However, solutions to this plumbing problem are often more complicated if not well handled. A home remedy consists of dumping boiling hot water and salt directly into the drain. Remove any traps to manually check clogs on the ground. For obstructions due to foreign objects or in hard-to-reach areas, consider renting snaking equipment. If it is necessary to replace drain pipes, check with local building codes to determine the type of pipe to be used for the particular application.

Leaking pipes

It’s something no one wants to think about, but unfortunately it happens. One of your water pipes suddenly starts to leak and you have water dripping all over, what do you do?

First, close the general water valve to prevent flow to your pipes. (Normally it is located where the water of the municipal service enters your house, near your meter or just inside the house). Since you have stopped the flow of water, here are some quick repairs that you can do to turn the water back on while you seek a permanent solution.

  • Put the tip of a pencil (or the tip of a piece of sharp wood) into the hole and break the tip.
  • Wrap the pipe with two to three inch or 7 inch of electrical insulation tape around the hole and use Plumber’s putty in combination with the tape to prevent water from flowing out.
  • Allow the putty to set for 1 hour and then turn the water on again.

There are numerous other types of emergency solutions that can be used during plumbing problems, but the first step in solving any plumbing problem is to turn off the water supply line that feeds the fixture or leaking pipe. If it happens that the leaking point is unseen or the branch line which leads to the leak has no valve, then you need to disconnect the water to the entire house. If you live in a climate where there is a risk of freezing, the primary shut-off valve is normally located on the ground floor. In warmer regions, valve can be located outside. If you have a well system, turn off the pump power and call a plumber.
