Why is My Showerhead Leaking?

Just like any faucet leak, showerhead leaks can be wasteful and it will cost you in the long run. Your showerhead might not be leaking because of deep rooted plumbing problems, it could just be a kink in the fixture itself. If you’re feeling a little handy dandy, try these DIY solutions before you call in the Empire Sewer & Water professionals»

Tips to Unclog

  • The first step to cleaning out showerhead clogs is to turn off the main water valve. Trust us, you don’t want that mess!
  • Unscrew the showerhead from the anchor. If you can separate the faceplate from the head itself, go ahead and do that as well.
  • Fill a ziploc bag or bucket with about 4-5 cups of white vinegar.
  • Submerge the showerhead in the vinegar for no less than 8 hours.
  • The soap scum and other mineral deposits should have started dissolving now. Once the time is up, remove the showerhead and get inside the holes with a toothpick to remove excess debris.
  • Screw it back on and see if your drip is eliminated!

Replacing Your Washer

  • The rubber washer that could be causing your problem is either in the faucet or in the showerhead itself.
  • If you have a two handle faucet, you’ll likely need to replace the washer in the faucet itself. If you have a single handle, you can replace the one that is in the shower head.
  • If it is the showerhead, you’ll need to start by removing it from the shower arm. Use a rag or towel and loosen the hold. Take a wrench if necessary and remove the collar nut.
  • The swivel ball is a metal fixture that allows your showerhead to move around. There will be a large metal nut with a ball on the end.
  • Once you locate this, the rubber washer will be directly beneath it. Remove the one that is currently in there and find the exact replacement at the hardware store.
  • Test to see if you found a solution!
