4 Plumbing Tips for New Homeowners

Buying a new home in the NYC area is an accomplishment that you and your spouse should be VERY proud of. Now that you have moved in, there has probably been a ton of information thrown at you that you are processing on the fly. Plumbing can’t be lost in the shuffle and we want to help you keep things in order. Here is what you need to know»

Locate Your Main Shutoff Valve
This is the most important thing to keep in mind and even some veteran homeowners are in the dark about it. If a pipe bursts or a toilet is leaking, the reaction you have should be to go halt this issue IMMEDIATELY. Every second counts when it comes to leaks and knowing where to go can save you hundreds in damages. If you can’t find it on your own, feel free to ask your Empire plumber when he comes to inspect your home!

Routine Cleaning
The time to care for your drain is not after a clog occurs– it’s before! Routine drain cleaning and maintenance will help prevent disaster and it’s good to get started when you first buy a home. Here are some things you can try:

  • Pour 2 TBSP of Baking Soda down the drain. Wash away with boiling water!
  • Install drain cover on your sink drain.
  • Put drain cap over your shower drain and change after every wash.
  • Pour liquid soap down toilet drain to break up potential clogs.

Stay Away From Liquid Drain Cleaner
Liquid drain cleaners like Drano work well if you need an emergency, one time solution. But the powerful chemicals that break up the clogs can also eat away at your pipes if they come in contact too often. If you experience another clog after your first experience with Drano, it is better to call your Empire Sewer & Water team to be safe!

Winter is Coming
It can be easy to forget the bitter cold while it is beautiful weather outside, but you always have to plan ahead as a homeowner. Living in the Bronx or Queens in January is not fun, and it is not fun for your pipes either. You’ll need to check out our insulation blog for tips on how to keep them safe from the cold!
