The Clogging Culprits for All Major Drains

Hey look, it is another blog about clogs from Empire Sewer & Water! That’s right, we bring you all things sewer and drains and we know how much you enjoy it. We are not bloodsuckers and we are never going to charge you for a service that you don’t need. That is why we give you these tips to help you avoid frequent visits from the plumber. Not that we don’t love coming to see you»

Kitchen
Your kitchen drain is probably the second most used drain in your home just behind the toilet. But we find that kitchen drains are often the most commonly clogged because of all of the different items that are going down them. People tend to forget that when rinsing dishes, a stopper is supposed to be there to catch the solid foods before they make it in the drain. If these items make it down the drain, you could be looking at a call to Empire Sewer & Water (which isn’t the worst thing in the world):

  • Grease/ Oil
  • Rice/ Pasta
  • Coffee Grinds
  • Egg Shells
  • Fibrous Foods

Shower
The number one cause for shower drain clogs is usually the mix of hair and soap. Go figure! What happens is some hairs fit through the strainer and become lodged in the U-shaped part of your drain. When you’re pumping soap, water and other things down the drain, they start to catch onto the hair and cause a glob to form in that U. This will prevent water from making it down into the drain.

Toilet
Your toilet is one of the most used plumbing fixtures in your home and with use comes the risk for clogs. We obviously know some pretty disgusting things make it down our toilets, but it is the things that don’t make it down that our plumbers are concerned with. Here are some of the biggest toilet clogging culprits:

  • Fecal matter
  • Overuse of toilet paper
  • Wipes
  • Jewelry
  • Toys
  • Shower equipment

If you have any questions about drain cleaning techniques or things you can do to save on repairs, be sure to talk to your technician on your next appointment.
