We are a society of people that likes to have things the way we want them and who doesn’t like nice, strong water pressure? Unfortunately, homes that come with older plumbing systems sometimes struggle with this and we are here to provide some insight. Troubleshoot your low water pressure problems with these helpful tips»
The Faucet
- The first thing you’re going to want to do is determine whether or not you have a whole house problem or just one particular faucet.
- Run hot and cold water for 15-30 seconds on every faucet in your home and compare the results.
- If the hot water is coming out significantly slower, it is likely a problem with your hot water heater.
- If one faucet is just not getting the job done, it could be due to a clog in the aerator that is not allowing enough water through.
Valves
- Small tweaks deep in your plumbing system could help bring your water pressure to exactly where you would like it to be.
- The Pressure Reducing Valve (PRV) is shaped like a bell and it is usually located where the main plumbing line enters your home.
- There will be a screw on this valve. To increase pressure, you’ll want to turn clockwise. To reduce pressure, counter-clockwise. See if that has any impact on the pressure that you are receiving.
Toilet Leaks
- If your toilet is constantly running or there is a leak present, this can be a huge waste of water and it can actually reduce water pressure.
- To determine if you have a leak, remove the lid of toilet tank and place a few drops of food coloring in there.
- Don’t flush or touch the toilet for the next hour or so.
- If color has leaked from the tank into the bowl itself, you have a leak that could possibly be contributing to your low water pressure. You can easily fix this issue by calling Empire Sewer & Water and asking for toilet repair.
